Virginia Galleries is not operated by any furniture manufacturer or commercial enterprise. Neither are we personal shoppers or sellers for any one or any organization. Items for sale by Virginia Galleries are extras that may have resulted from buying a set to gain one specific set, an item displaced because of an upgrade, or we just changed our mind about it after it was placed in our home.
Virginia Galleries is a "hobby site" operated by two people with a passion for fine furniture. We gravitated to the "previously owned" market, mostly for budget reasons, and liked what we found. Items produced from the early 1900's to the 1980's are prettier than more modern pieces - partly because woods had better figure then because 'old growth' wood was more available. Also, more labor was used during construction - especially finishing. We gravitated to solid wood construction because in the beginning we sought unsightly pieces that were otherwise sound. That is the trick - to look beyond surface appearance and see what is beneath.
We are not operating this site for a profit. We work with computers and web sites in our day jobs and preparing a web page to advertise items was a natural. It is easier, and certainly less expensive, to post pictures and detailed information about a piece on a web page than it is in a newspaper. With a tweak here and there, and using a piece of software available free to the public, we were able to create a site that will assist others to buy and sell quality home furnishings.
